What Is Bowen Therapy?

Bowen Therapy is a technique that was developed on the teachings and practices of the late Tom Bowen (1916-1982), who lived in Geelong.

Bowen Therapy is a gentle approach to soft tissue therapy, where subtle moves or manipulations are preformed over muscle, tendons and ligaments. These powerful moves have a dramatic effect on the body, resulting in pain relief, less muscle tension or tightness and overall creating a calming effect on the body.

What Can Bowen Therapy Treat?

Bowen Therapy is so gentle it can treat people of all ages, from a new born baby to the elderly, and we can definitely treat pregnant woman!

Bowen can treat muscular pain, such as back pain, sciatica, neck issues, shoulder pain, knee, ankle and foot problems. As well as, hip issues, RSI, carpal tunnel, tennis elbow, sports and accidental injuries.

Bowen has also helped people with respiratory and digestion Issues, menstrual and hormonal irregularities, respiratory problems, vertigo, bell's palsy, dizziness, headaches, migraine, sinus issues and so much more!

What Can You Expect In A Bowen Treatment?

If it is your first time at the clinic, you will be asked to complete a medical history sheet. This will provide much needed information to assist in assessing and developing a treatment plan.

Depending on what your presentation is, you may be asked to partake in a range of Orthopaedic tests so the Therapist can have insight to your pain, as well as using this for a measurement to compare to post treatment.

A session can take between 30 mins to an hour and can be performed though light clothing.

Often treatment is accomplished with the client laying down on a treatment table, client comfort is most important when treating, therefore this can often be negotiated to provide the most relaxing position for the client.

Bowen Therapy & Babies

Bowen therapy is a gentle solution for new born babies and older babies that are experiencing physical discomfort.

The treatments can help with babies who have experienced a difficult birth or are having issues with sleeping or digestion.
It is important to factor in feeding, sleeping patterns and any other environmental disturbances that affect your baby’s routines and well being.

At first, we observe the baby’s behaviour and ask you about your baby’s general health and history. From here we apply simple Bowen Therapy moves suitable for your baby.

The two most common areas that I treat babies in is colic and reflux.

Baby Colic:

Colic relates to a baby that cries a lot and fusses over feeding. Although there is no concrete evidence as to why this occurs, some have suggest it is exposure to an over stimulated environment and younger babies just want to shut the world around them out. This can be a traumatic time for parents especially when colic has no physical or medical cause that is obvious.

Bowen Therapy helps your baby relax and can aid in calming them so they show less signs of colic.

Seeing your GP is important to establish that your baby does not have any underlying conditions such as allergies to your milk or cow’s milk, hernia, infection or reflux.

Baby Reflux

Reflux or gastro-oesophageal reflux, is where acid from the stomach repeats into the baby’s oesophagus causing discomfort. Babies tend to have a less efficient sphincter valve often not closing properly. The problem can be exacerbated by a baby spending a lot of time on their backs.

I have had the pleasure of treating babies with colic and reflux. Often mothers come to me when their babies are unsettled and constantly crying. A few gentle moves of Bowen Therapy and parents are thrilled to have a more settled contented baby.
